Frequently asked questions
Is massage therapy painful?
It is common to feel sore after a massage; especially if it is your first massage or it has been some time since your last treatment. This soreness typically dissipates after a day or so. You may also experience some pain or tenderness during treatment, this may depend on the areas being treated, pre-existing pain, or the amount of pressure the therapist is applying.
Can I get a massage if I am not in pain?
Yes. Although most people wait until the pain starts to seek massage; it can be great way to prevent the onset of pain before it starts. By going for regular maintenance, massage therapy can help reduce muscle tension, improve relaxation, and reduce stress, which are some of the factors that can lead to muscle pain and stiffness.
Can massage therapy help with pinched nerves?
Massage therapy can help relieve some of the symptoms caused by pinched nerves: it however, cannot cure the underlying issue. Massage may relieve some of the compression on the nerve, which can create a window of reduced pain to allow you to perform other therapeutic remedies such as stretching and exercises specific to the area effected.
Do I have to take my clothes off?
No. The massage therapist may instruct you to remove some of your clothing, however you only need to remove as much clothing as you feel comfortable with. You can discuss this with your therapist before the treatment. The massage therapist will leave the room while you are getting ready and knock before coming back in to ensure your privacy.
What should I expect at my first massage?
For your first massage therapy treatment you will be required to fill out a health history form. Your massage therapist will discuss your reasons for seeking massage therapy and what your goals are for the treatment. They will conduct an assessment to gather more information and decide on what is the best treatment plan for you. They will then explain the process of preparing for the massage and give you the opportunity to ask any questions. Once you are ready on the table, the massage therapist will come back into the room and begin treatment on the areas discussed.
Is it O.K. to ask for more or less pressure?
Yes, the massage therapist should check in on the pressure of the treatment and adjust accordingly. However, you do not need to wait for your massage therapist to check in, feel free to let them know at anytime if the pressure is to your liking.
Should I talk to my massage therapist?
It is totally up to you whether you want to talk to your therapist, or just have a quiet relaxing massage. We do recommend that you mention to your massage therapist if you feel too hot or too cold, too much pain, or if you forgot to mention something during the initial consultation.
Do I need a doctors referral?
No, you do not need a doctors referral to see a massage therapist. However some extended healthcare providers may require one if you plan on submitting your treatment through insurance. Please check with your insurance provider if they do require one.
Is massage therapy covered by insurance?
